‘Working with Anna for the choreography was a delight.
The song is about writing and performing and what our relationship is with 'the stage' when we are on or off it, and when we are unable to fulfil our role as writers. This song was written after a lengthy period of writers block. I went to a Warren Ellis in conversation event and the way that he spoke about influence really opened my eyes to the endless chain of influence that exists before us.
I didn't tell Anna any of this, I just sent them the lyrics with the choruses highlighted, and in a totally magical way they completely understood. I learned that Anna referenced the choreography that got them into dancing, Anne De Keersmaker's dance, Rosas Danst Rosas.
I love all the gestures that they chose for this routine that just completely fit into how the song feels to sing. For the second chorus we developed an algorithm using a dice to randomly select the order of the parts. We numbered each part and used the results to ascertain how the second time round would go.’
